FLAVOUR PROFILES

Rather than classify whisky by region we  look at flavour exclusively. Being a keen student of the works of Dr David Wishart, and my own experience of more than a thjousand whisky tastings I have adapted a flavour grouping as laid out below.  Mostly it is about having fun and giving you examples of comaparitive whiskies.

 Group 1Light ,medium sweet whisky fruity and floral notes with little or no peat and smoke. Crisp easy drinking.

Glen Kinchie, Bunnahabhain, Glen Moray, Bladnoch

Group 2 Light , medium sweet whisky fruity notes lead to malt and hints of nuts with slight floral and spicy influence. Low or no smoke and peat. 

An Cnoc, Auchentoshan Glen Grant Glengoyne Cardhu, Speyside, Tamdhu

Group 3 Medium bodied medium sweet low peat and smoke, slightly spicy more pronounced flora and hints of honey.

Auchriosk, Ardmore, Deanston’ Glen Keith, Glenrothes, Tomatin, Tullibardine.

Group 4 Medium bodied sweet low or no peat and smoke with tart and floral notes.

Isle of Arran, Glenfiddich, Glen Spey, Speyburn, Miltonduff.

Group 5 Medium body medium sweet, more malt influence honey and fruity notes with more spice and wine notes.

The Balvenie, Dahlwhinnie, Glendullan, Glen Elgin, The Glenlivet Linkwood, Royal Brackla

Group 6 Medium to full bodied medium sweet nutty malt loads of sherry and spice influence with tons of honey.

Ben Nevis, Glenfarclas, Cragganmore, Edradour, Glenturret

Group 7Medium to full bodied medium sweet with more floral influence smoky spicy subtle wine and fruit notes.

Balblair Craigellachie, Glen Garioch, Glenmorangie, Oban

Group 8 Full bodied medium sweet with huge sherry influence abundance of spice nutty malt and subtle smoke.

Macallan Dailuaine, Dalmore, Mortlach, Royal Lochnagar.

Group 9 Medium to full bodied yet light and dry with smoke spice honey hints of mocha and nuts.

Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Highland Park, Isle of Jura, Springbank

Group 10 Full bodied dry and pungent flinty peaty notes with smoke and medicinal spices.

Ardbeg Caol Ila, Lagavulin Talisker, Laphroaig
